Student FAQs

What are the key aspects of the plan for students?

Key aspect of the plan for students:

  • reaffirm UBC’s commitment in the Vancouver Campus Plan to provide the capacity to build enough student housing for 50% of the 2010 full-time student population
  • dedicate housing in the Gage South area designated 12-month housing for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows
  • develop an advocacy strategy to increase the shelter allowance in the student loan program.
  • continue to limit rental rates in SHHS housing based on a self-supporting, fully cost-recovery basis, and operate in a fiscally responsible fashion to ensure rates are maintained at or below market rental rates
  • introduce new community-building programs for graduate students, similar to those in undergraduate residences

How is UBC addressing the housing affordability challenges faced by students?

To help address housing affordability concerns for students, the University will increase on campus dedicated student housing supply, will continue to limit rental rates based on a self-supporting, fully cost-recovery basis, and will operate in a fiscally responsible fashion to ensure rates are maintained at or below market rental rates.

UBC is also creating an advocacy strategy to increase the shelter allowance in the student loan program.
